FRANKFORT, Ky. (WDRB) — Castle & Key distillery is rolling out its first batch of bourbon.
Bourbon runs in the veins of the landmark property, it’s previously home to the Old Taylor Distillery built in the 1800s before closing in the 1972. The property left unkept for about 40 years before Castle & Key stepped in and restored it.
“It required massive restoration. We’ve been chipping away at the project for eight years now,” Brett Connors said.
Connors is the head blender for the distillery, also known as its ‘whiskey wizard.’
Since 2014, Castle & Key has been producing mostly gin, while distilling and then waiting for its bourbon to age.
“It is a phenomenal feeling to highlight all the work from our team and staff. Years of blood sweat and tears and just effort,” Connors said. “So We’re excited to finally have consumers taste that.”
Connors said the youngest bourbon is four years old while the oldest is up to five years and three months.
“It’s at the point where it’s too good not to share with anyone,” he said.
Connors said Castle & Key feels blessed to bring back bourbon after fifty years since the last production on the same historic land.
“This being the first one in over fifty years I think it’s a really cool piece of Kentucky history, but it’s also delicious,” he said.
And if you’re a collector, Connors recommends buy one bottle for looks and one to drink with friends and family.
Connors hopes Castle & Key is remembered for not only for the bourbon, but hopes it reminds folks who visit the grounds of the rich past of the Old Taylor Distillery.
“There’s a lot of Kentuckians who have ties to this place,” Connors said. “So to be able to restore the site is a big deal, but to physically have liquid in a bottle is a bigger deal.”
This coming Saturday, March 26, you can get your hands on the first bottles of its small batch bourbon for $55 before tax.
Castle & Key Distillery will open at 9:00 a.m. for shopping in the Boiler Room only. The rest of the property will open for or normal hours from 10:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
No reservation necessary to purchase and there’s a 12 bottle limit.
